bio:

Stephanie Cuyubamba Kong is a Peruvian-American artist, musician, and educator working within the act of constructing identity — of the self, cultural, community, and national — using aesthetics, sounds, memories, and affect.

Her practice manifests in photographs, video, and installations that attempt to describe the complex, simultaneous melancholy and joy embodied by places that can either marginalize us or offer a sense of belonging. Moving between her home landscape of the Midwest by way of Ohio, and her heritage homeland of Peru, she uses aesthetics, objects, material culture, and the act of reference to prescribe new meanings to place and belonging. Where the exploitative nature of colonial-capitalist economies have restricted our forms of existing authentically, Cuyubamba Kong builds imaginative and beautiful possibilities for the future of cross North-South American cultures. At the core of her practice lies an ethos of audacious optimism, sensitivity for the complexity of in-betweenness, and an adoration of the ways we build worlds for ourselves.

She is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a certificate in Critical Visions (2021). Recent exhibitions include Photography and Tenderness (part of the FOTOFOCUS Biennial, USA 2022), Scenes from Nowhere: Abject Dreamscapes at NKU Art Galleries (Kentucky, USA 2022), and Obrar La Memoria at Magenta Galeria (Lima, Peru 2023). As an artist and performer she has held residencies at the Contemporary Arts Center of Cincinnati (2019) and the Price Hill Creative Community Festival (2018). She was a 2022 Fulbright US Study/Research: Arts grantee, and currently lives in Houston, Texas where she is pursuing a Masters in Fine Arts.
